Costume and Textiles Association for Norfolk Museums

The Costume and Textile Association

for Norfolk Museums

The Association exists to support and promote Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Services’ collection of costume and textiles stored at the Costume and Textile Study Centre, Carrow House, Norwich. Our aim is to achieve greater exposure of this unique costume and textile collection. The C&TA as it is affectionately known, is a lively group of people who enjoy sharing an interest in all aspects of costume and textiles.

We are active in putting together a range of events in and around Norwich each year. Our Volunteer Co-ordinator encourages members to share any specialist expertise and/or enthusiasms with the Association with a view to participating in our events. Visits are arranged to exhibitions and collections locally and in other parts of the country. There is a very successful annual Costume and Textile weekend fair at Wolterton Hall in September and social events. These events are open to anyone with a concern for costume and textiles and offer the opportunity to share in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

C&TA EVENTS

Walk with the warp and just follow the sheep!

Through interpreters and working displays this self-guided Norwich City Textile Trail is designed to highlight the rich history of the medieval textile trade to the final 19th century flourish.

Norfolk weavers, spinners, dyers, lace-makers and embroiderers will be exhibiting their crafts together with costumed dancers and atmospheric mystery plays, culminating with a display of the fabulous Norwich shawls. There is plenty to see!

The form of the Textile Trail is similar in style to open gardens. A £5.00 map, children free, can be purchased on the day at the St Peter Hungate, at the top of Elm Hill, Norwich. The map will permit entrance to ten exhibition sites and two museums along the historic route. Visitors may dip in and out as they please, taking their time to wander through some of the most interesting streets in the city.

Saturday 25th August 10.30 to 4.30
Sunday 26th August 1.00 to 4.30
Monday 27th August 10.30 to 4.30

The trail starts at the top of Elm Hill. Maps can be purchased in advance from
